Project Overview
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announces a Plans Display and Project Presentation for the SR 0501, Section 02B Bridge Replacement project in Bethel Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania. This project involves the replacement of the bridge carrying SR 0501 (Lancaster Avenue) over an unnamed tributary (UNT) to Little Swatara Creek, in Bethel Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania. The SR 0501 Section 02B Bridge is located approximately 850 feet southwest of the intersection of SR 0501 and Rehrersburg Road.
The project also includes guiderail upgrades and minor roadway approach work. The existing structure was constructed in 1928 and is a single-span concrete beam bridge supported on reinforced concrete abutments and wingwalls at a 90-degree skew and is in poor condition. The proposed structure will be a precast reinforced concrete box culvert with precast end sections (flared wingwalls). The structure crosses the creek at a 90-degree skew and will be located at approximately the same location as the existing bridge.
The project will utilize a staged construction approach to limit economic impacts from a detour route. During staged construction, a single lane of the bridge will remain open. This lane will use a temporary traffic signal to carry both directions of traffic during construction.
