Project Overview

Trail Tunnel No. 4 under Route 40 is located in Buffalo Township, Washington County. The project consists of selective tree removal, clearing, grubbing, regrading above each portal, crack repairs, repointing of joints, regrading embankments adjacent to each portal, placing single face concrete barriers along the northern portal to the tunnel, cleaning existing ditches, placing rock lining along the unnamed tributary, and replacing the cross-pipe at the access road. There will be no impacts to vehicular or pedestrian traffic.

The purpose of the project is to provide preservative maintenance to a tunnel which will be part of a future extension to the National Pike Trail. This maintenance will extend the useful life of the structure and provide safe trail use. If not addressed, additional deterioration will progress at an exponential rate resulting in increased repair and maintenance costs.

The project is currently in Preliminary Engineering. Final design is expected to begin in fall 2024. Construction letting is anticipated in spring 2025 with construction beginning in summer 2025 and completion by fall 2025. These timeframes are subject to change.
