Long-term Lane Closure Planned for Route 764, 6th Avenue Between 7th Street and 9th Street in Altoona beginning June 3

05/31/2024

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is informing motorists that beginning Monday, June 3, 2024, the contractor will implement a long-term left lane closure along Route 764 (6th Avenue) between 7th Street and 9th Street and along 7th Street between 5th Avenue and 7th Avenue in Altoona which will include traffic delays and congestion, and a short-term truck detour.

Motorists along Route 764 (6th Avenue) and Route 4009 (7th Street) should anticipate traffic congestion and delays of approximately 15 minutes from the beginning of the work-phase on June 3 through mid-September.

PennDOT encourages motorists, especially those needing to access UPMC Altoona, to avoid the area and seek alternate routes to help ease congestion during construction.

An oversized truck detour will also be implemented from the start of the work through late July for truck traffic attempting to access Route 4009 (7th Street) from Route 746 (6th Avenue). Oversized trucks will be directed to use the posted truck detour by following Route 764 (6th Avenue) north to North 8th Street, cross over the North 8th Street Bridge and onto Route 4013 (North 4th Avenue), turn left onto Route 4013 (North 4th Avenue) and proceed south along Route 4013 (which transitions from North 4th Avenue to Chestnut Avenue) until reaching Route 4009 (7th Street).

PennDOT urges motorists to obey all speed restrictions, traffic signs and flaggers, to stay alert to changing conditions, refrain from blocking intersections when stopped, avoid distractions, and drive responsibly.

The project, which began on March 25, includes the addition of a 75-foot left-turn lane along Route 764 (6th Avenue) at 7th Street and traffic signal improvements for the proposed left turn lane. Also included are milling and overlay, modifications to lane designations and pavement markings and signing on 7th Street between 7th and Chestnut avenues. The project is estimated at approximately $4,274,000 and is being completed by Glenn O. Hawbaker, Inc. of State College.
