Milroy Road Reconstruction to Begin Next Week at Route 322/Chambers Hill Road Intersection Improvement Project in Swatara Township, Dauphin County

03/15/2024

Pipe and inlet installation planned on WB Route 322 next week; nightly EB Route 322 lane restrictions continue

Harrisburg, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that work to reconstruct Milroy Road at the Route 322/Chambers Hill Road Intersection Improvement project in Swatara Township, Dauphin County, is scheduled to begin next week.

Weather permitting, work will begin Monday, March 18. The contractor will place curb, grade and pave on Milroy Road between Grayson Road and Adams Drive. There will be lane restrictions under flagging each day from 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM. This work is expected to last through the end of April, weather permitting.

A lane restriction will be in place on westbound Route 322 from 9:00 PM to 6:00 AM the nights of Wednesday, March 20, and Thursday, March 21. The restriction will extend from Bridge Road (Route 2018) to Chambers Hill Road so the contractor can complete a cross pipe and install an inlet.

Nightly right lane closures on eastbound Route 322 between Mushroom Hill Road and Chambers Hill Road are expected to continue for about three more weeks, weather permitting. These restrictions will be in place from 9:00 PM to 6:00 AM Monday through Thursday nights so the contractor can excavate in the area of Witmer Drive.

Motorists should be alert and drive with caution through the work zone.

This work is part of the reconstruction of the intersection of Route 322 with Grayson Road and Chambers Hill Road in the township. The contractor will pave the shoulders of westbound Route 322 from Bridge Road to Witmer Drive to strengthen them for future traffic shifts.

The Route 322 signalized intersection with Grayson Road and Chambers Hill Road (Route 3006) is being reconstructed to four approaches with left-turn lanes removed from Route 322.

One through lane will be added in each direction of Route 322. Eastbound Route 322 left turns will be replaced with a new jug handle and signal at Witmer Road. Westbound Route 322 left turns will be replaced with a new roundabout and bypass lanes at the intersection with Milroy Road and Grayson Road.

Construction of three retaining walls will accommodate the widening and geometry, as well as the addition of dynamic message signs, stormwater management basins, drainage, guiderail, barrier, signs and upgraded pavement markings, and other miscellaneous construction.

This project is expected to be completed by August 18, 2027. J.D. Eckman, Inc., of Atglen, PA, is the prime contractor on this $38,561,349 project.
