Dunmore, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) will host a public meeting on November 14, 2024, at 5:00 PM to introduce the Route 424 at Interstate 81 (I-81) project, located in Hazle Township, Luzerne County. The meeting will feature a presentation from PennDOT Engineering District 4 and project team representatives, followed by an open discussion to receive public feedback and answer questions. Project area design maps will be displayed for the entirety of the meeting for all visitors to review.
The purpose of the project is to develop an appropriate transportation solution for the interchange at Route 424 and I-81, Exit 141 (Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce Beltway), to address current and future transportation needs by upgrading from the current diamond interchange to a Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI). The DDI will utilize the existing bridges over I-81 to carry the westbound traffic and require two new bridges over I-81 to accommodate the eastbound traffic.
Construction of this transportation facility will improve operations and mobility and include design elements of a modern interchange to address congestion deficiencies caused by local and regional traffic growth. Additional benefits include mitigation of level of service deficiencies at the existing interchange ramp junctions and across the existing bridge.
The public meeting will be held on Thursday, November 14, 2024, at the Hazle Township Commons Building, 101 W. 27th Street, Hazle Township, PA 18202. The plan display will begin at 5:00 PM with the presentation beginning at 6:00 PM.
Comment forms will be provided at the meeting and are on the project website for the public to submit feedback and questions. Comments will be accepted from November 1, 2024 through November 30, 2024. You could e-mail the form to amlolli@pa.gov or mail to Penn DOT Engineering District 4-0, Attn: Amy Lolli, 55 Industrial Park Drive, Dunmore, PA 18512
