Excavation Work on Route 26 Betterment Project Starts Monday

10/31/2024

Clearfield, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced that excavation work on its Route 26 betterment project to reconstruct and widen the roadway will start Monday, November 4. This companion project to the high-speed connector between Interstates 80 and 99 will support the regional freight economy and improve the reliability of roadway travel through the region.

The excavation work, consisting of clearing and grubbing vegetation and select tree removal, will impact traffic on Route 26 between the westbound interchange of Interstate 80 and Walt Road. The contractor will implement short-term lane closures during daylight hours.

PennDOT said work to reconstruct and widen the roadway will not begin until the 2025 construction season.

Overall work on this project includes increasing the lane and shoulder width of Route 26, reconstruction of the existing roadway, drainage improvements, guide rail installation, and miscellaneous construction. Glenn O. Hawbaker Inc. of State College, PA, is the contractor on this $8.6 million project. PennDOT anticipates project completion in the fall of 2026. All work is weather-dependent.
