PennDOT Closes Portion of Route 555 in Elk County Due to Flooding

08/09/2024

Clearfield, PA - The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced that a section of Route 555 in Elk County has been closed due to flooding. The road is closed from the beginning of the Route at the intersection with Route 255 in Jay Township, to the intersection of Rock Hill Road in Benezette Township. PennDOT expects the closure to remain in place until at least 3:00 PM on Friday, dependent upon the amount of continued rainfall.

PennDOT is closely monitoring roadways and the impacts of flooding due to heavy rains with the arrival of Tropical Storm Debby to the region.

PennDOT will issue updates as needed throughout the day. PennDOT also cautions motorists to never drive through flooded roadways, as it takes just two feet of fast-moving water to float a car. Anyone who drives around barriers intended to close a road can face increased penalties if emergency responders are called to rescue motorists who disregard traffic control signs.

Motorists are encouraged to “Know Before They Go" by checking conditions on more than 40,000 roadway miles by visiting www.511PA.com. 511PA, which is free and available 24 hours a day, provides traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, traffic speed information, and access to more than 1,000 traffic cameras.
