Roadway Widening on Route 522 Improvement Project Continues

07/08/2024

Clearfield, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) issued an update for a project to improve approximately five miles of Route 522 in Lewistown Borough and Derry and Decatur townships in Mifflin County. This work will address drainage deficiencies throughout this corridor and improve the ride quality of the road surface and multiple structures within the project limits.

Flaggers in the roadway will enforce single-lane closures between 6:00 AM and 5:00 PM as the contractor completes roadway widening in the right lane between Log Lane and Goss Road on Monday, July 8, and in the right lane between Fox Avenue and Meadowbrook Lane on Tuesday, July 9.

Flagger in the roadway will also enforce single-lane closures controlled by flaggers at the bridge near Crossover Road. The contractor will work beneath the structure to improve the abutment walls.

On Friday, July 12, the contractor will inspect pipes throughout the entire work zone. Flaggers in the roadway will again enforce single-lane closures while this work occurs.

PennDOT urges drivers to build extra time into their travel schedules as delays are probable when work is ongoing, to watch for slow-moving and stopped vehicles within the work zone, exercise caution while traveling through work zones, obey posted speed limits, and always buckle up.

PennDOT also asks homeowners to park their vehicles at the end of their driveways farthest from the roadway when possible to allow more room for the heavy equipment to operate. It also said it will place steel plates so that driveways and side roads are still accessible while work is ongoing.

In addition to the widening work, the contractor will also place material along the edge of the roadway to stabilize the shoulders. It will also be resetting mailboxes as needed in the areas highlighted above.

Overall work on this project involves roadway reconstruction, paving, drainage improvements, guide rail installation, pavement marking, bridge preservation work, and miscellaneous construction. Grannas Bros. Stone & Asphalt Co., Inc. is the contractor on this $6.2 million project. PennDOT anticipates project completion in late October. All work is weather-dependent.
