Clearfield, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) updated motorists on the schedule for its South Atherton Street (Route 3014) project that stretches from Curtin Road to just north of Westerly Parkway in State College. Motorists traveling through the work zone can expect the following the week of June 17.
PennDOT anticipates paving between Beaver and West Foster avenues to wrap up overnight on Sunday, June 16. Crews will pave between West Foster Avenue and Center Lane starting the evening of Monday, June 17, and overnight each night until the morning of Friday, June 21. PennDOT said it expects traffic delays while paving occurs and urged drivers to consider alternate routes when possible. Those who must drive through the work zone will encounter the following closures.
- An eastbound right (travel) lane closure while crews pave during the evening of Monday, June 17.
- A westbound travel lane closure while crews pave during the evening of Tuesday, June 18.
- A center (turning) lane closure while crews pave during the evening of Wednesday, June 19.
Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during paving operations. Flaggers will also be stationed at every side street to assist with passenger vehicle and pedestrian traffic. Additionally, PennDOT will set the traffic signals at the intersections of Beaver Avenue and Westerly Parkway to “flash" mode as necessary.
Additional work scheduled for the week includes the installation of drainage pipe and full-depth roadway reconstruction between Calder Way and White Course Drive. The contractor will reduce traffic to a single lane during daylight hours, and flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control. A crew will also install underground conduit for new traffic signals and overhead lighting between Curtin Road and White Course Drive throughout the week. The contractor intends to shift traffic around this area.
PennDOT posts updates and detour information on the Atherton Street project page weekly and encourages drivers to visit the page at www.penndot.pa.gov/AthertonStreet.
Overall work on the project includes roadway reconstruction, drainage improvements that include pipes and inlets, water and sewer lines, concrete curbing, sidewalks and detectable warning surfaces, pavement markings, traffic signals and supports, and miscellaneous items. HRI, Inc. of State College is the contractor on this $30.7 million project. PennDOT anticipates the contractor completing the project in the fall of 2024, but all work is weather and schedule dependent.
PennDOT reminds motorists that intermittent traffic stops are possible for short periods during work activities and urges drivers to use caution when traveling through the work zone. PennDOT also reminds drivers not to follow construction equipment into the closed lane and to use both lanes to the merge point to minimize traffic back-ups and shorten travel delays when approaching the work zone.
