PennDOT Announces Traffic Switch Coming on Atherton Street

04/12/2024

Clearfield, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) updated drivers on the schedule for its South Atherton Street (Route 3014) project that stretches from Curtin Road to just north of Westerly Parkway in State College. PennDOT said the switch is expected to occur Friday, April 19.

Westbound traffic heading towards North Atherton Street will be shifted into the turning lane at Center Lane before transitioning back at West Irvin Avenue. Eastbound traffic will continue to use the right lane throughout the entirety of the work zone.

Work scheduled for Monday, April 15, through Thursday, April 18, is expected to occur between West Irvin Avenue and Center Lane. Work scheduled for those dates and locations is as follows:

  • Two crews will continue work on paving and concrete preparation.
  • One crew will continue placing concrete curbing and sidewalk.
  • One crew will place conduit and junction boxes for new traffic signals.

Drivers should expect to encounter flaggers in the roadway providing traffic control between the hours of 7:00 AM and 5:00 PM throughout the week. PennDOT urges motorists to consider alternate routes if possible as traffic congestion is expected while the contractor is engaged in paving operations.

The contractor will maintain a pedestrian detour again this week. This detour will be fluid, and the contractor will adjust it as crews progress through the work zone. PennDOT urges pedestrians to use the detour and avoid walking through the construction zone as it puts them at risk.

PennDOT expects the traffic to be reduced to a single lane in each direction between West Irvin Avenue and Center Lane until early June while the contractor completes drainage improvements through the work zone.

PennDOT urges motorists to pay attention to work zone and directional signage to enhance safety and keep traffic moving efficiently. Message boards alerting motorists to the construction zone and changing traffic patterns remain in place.

PennDOT posts updates and detour information on the Atherton Street project page weekly and encourages drivers to visit the page at www.penndot.pa.gov/AthertonStreet

Overall work on the project includes roadway reconstruction, drainage improvements that include pipes and inlets, water and sewer lines, concrete curbing, sidewalks and detectable warning surfaces, pavement markings, traffic signals and supports, and miscellaneous items. HRI, Inc. of State College is the contractor on this $30.7 million project. PennDOT anticipates the contractor completing the project in the fall of 2024, but all work is weather and schedule dependent.

PennDOT reminds motorists that intermittent traffic stops are possible for short periods during work activities and urges drivers to use caution when traveling through the work zone. PennDOT also reminds drivers not to follow construction equipment into the closed lane and to use both lanes to the merge point to minimize traffic back-ups and shorten travel delays when approaching the work zone.

Motorists can check conditions on major roadways by visiting www.511PA.com. 511PA, which is free and available 24 hours a day, provides traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, traffic speed information, and access to more than 1,000 traffic cameras.
