PennDOT, PSP, Monroeville Police Highlight Aggressive Driving Awareness, Urge Safe Driving

07/25/2024

Pittsburgh, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), Pennsylvania State Police (PSP), and Monroeville Police Department hosted an aggressive driving enforcement event today to remind motorists of the dangers of aggressive behavior behind the wheel.
PennDOT's southwestern region spearheaded the initiative and teamed up with the Highway Safety Network, PSP and the Monroeville, Plum Borough, and Murrysville Police Departments in Allegheny County to oversee the aggressive driving enforcement. Police conducted enforcement near the station, which is in a busy area close to roadway construction.

Aggressive driving is one of the leading factors of highway crashes and fatalities in Pennsylvania. During the enforcement period, which runs through August 18, police will target drivers demonstrating unsafe behaviors such as speeding, careless driving, heavy truck violations, pedestrian safety, red light running, tailgating, and other aggressive driving actions.

This mobilization also comes in time for motorists to prepare for the upcoming school year. By practicing safe behaviors now, drivers can get into the habit of being particularly cautious in residential areas and school zones.

According to PennDOT data, in 2023 there were 6,610 crashes involving aggressive driving statewide. Also last year, there were 3,676 crashes involving speeding, which is the top offense law enforcement sees in aggressive driving citations.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), speeding was a contributing factor, making up 29% of all traffic fatalities in 2022. In southwest Pennsylvania, NHTSA reported that in 2023, speeding-related traffic crashes led to 193 deaths. They also found speeding fatalities reached a 14-year high in 2021.
