Smithbridge Road over Webb Creek Bridge Replacement
Project Location
Overview
The existing bridge is a single-span reinforced concrete T-beam bridge carrying SR 3046 (Smith Bridge Road) over Webb Creek. The project involves the replacement of the existing structure with a single-span cast-in-place reinforced concrete box culvert. The bridge was closed to traffic on July 14, 2023, pursuant to a routine safety inspection that identified scour damage that critically undermined a bridge abutment. The bridge will remain closed to all traffic until construction of the replacement has been completed.
Bridge Replacement Project
PennDOT will begin construction on Monday, October 2 on a project to replace the bridge that carries Smithbridge Road over Webb Creek in Concord Township, Delaware County.
The 96-year-old bridge has been closed since July 14, 2023, following a bridge inspection that determined structure deterioration and increased undermining due to storms.
Under this project, PennDOT's contractor will replace the existing 20-foot-long, reinforced concrete T-beam bridge with a single-cell, cast-in-place, concrete box culvert. Stream stabilization and protection will precede demolition and removal of the existing structure
During construction, motorists will be directed to follow the existing detour using Bethel Road, Garnet Mine Road, Route 491 (Naamans Creek Road), and northbound U.S. 202 (Wilmington-West Chester Pike).
Drivers are advised to allow extra time when traveling near the work area because backups and delays may occur. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.
Road-Con Inc. of West Chester, Chester County, is the general contractor on this bridge replacement project, which is financed with 100% state funds. Construction on the entire project is expected to finish in April 2024.
