U.S. 1 Widening Project
Project Location
Overview
This project is located in East Marlborough and Kennett Townships, Chester County. U.S. 1 in southeastern Pennsylvania is one of the principal arteries that carries significant traffic throughout the greater Philadelphia area.
U.S. 1 Section H02 widens U.S. 1 from four lanes to six lanes from the Kennett/Oxford Bypass to the intersection of U.S. 1 & Greenwood Road. The scope of this project is to provide three thru lanes in each direction.
The project will modify existing shoulders and right turn lanes where needed to accommodate the third thru lane in each direction through the corridor. The project will also add a sidewalk along the north side of U.S. 1 from Schoolhouse Lane to Shopping Center Signal, and widen the southwest corner of Bayard Road and U.S. 1 to allow for truck turns and signal modifications within the corridor. A DMS sign will be added along the U.S. 1 Bypass south of the Route 82 interchange.
Construction Update (January 2024)
The project is expected to begin roadway construction in the early summer of 2024, following utility relocations. Utility relocation is ongoing along U.S. 1 and is expected to continue into June 2024.
Roadway construction will follow in three stages. Stages 1 and 2 will be widening U.S. 1 and reconstructing the middle lane. Stage 1 is expected to begin in the summer of 2024 and continue into June 2025. Stage 2 will follow in June and July of 2025. Then Stage 3, consisting of a final mill/overlay and final pavement marking application, is scheduled in July and August of 2025. Miscellaneous work including signal upgrades and sign structure construction will also take place. The current project completion date is scheduled for Fall 2025.
