U.S. 1 Section 200
Project Location
Overview
This project will reconstruct an approximately 6.5-mile stretch of U.S. 1 (the Kennett-Oxford Bypass) between just north of the Route 896 interchange to just north of the Route 41 interchange in Penn Township, London Grove Township, and West Grove Borough, Chester County.
Proposed roadway work includes full-depth reconstruction of the existing pavement, minor shoulder widening, guide rail replacement, drainage improvements, and new stormwater management facilities. Proposed bridge work includes the replacement of three overhead bridges, the rehabilitation of one overhead bridge, the replacement of two mainline bridges, the rehabilitation of four mainline bridges, and the rehabilitation of one mainline culvert along the corridor. The mainline pavement will be lowered, or the intersecting roadway will be raised at each overpass to obtain the required vertical clearance over the bypass. Proposed traffic operations improvements include lengthening of acceleration and deceleration lanes at entrance and exit ramps, intersection control improvements at the ramp terminal intersections, and intelligent transportation systems including CCTV cameras and Dynamic Message Signs.
Approach roadway work is proposed at the intersecting roadways including Route 796, Route 841, and Route 41 to accommodate turning lanes and profile adjustments at the interchanges. New traffic signals are proposed at the U.S. 1/Route 796 interchange ramp terminal intersections. Single-lane roundabouts are proposed for new intersection control at the U.S. 1/Route 841 interchange ramp terminal intersections. Hybrid roundabouts are proposed for new intersection control at the U.S. 1/Route 41 interchange ramp terminal intersections. The intersections of Chatham Road and E. Evergreen St. (Route 841), and Oakland Avenue in West Grove Borough will also be improved as part of the project. A traffic signal is proposed at the intersection of Chatham Road (Route 841) and E. Evergreen St, and a turn lane is proposed at the intersection of E. Evergreen St (Route 841) and Oakland Ave.
This project is currently in the preliminary engineering phase. It is estimated that construction will start in late 2027 and be complete in 2030.
