Project Location

Overview

This project will reconstruct an approximately 4.5-mile stretch of the Kennett-Oxford Bypass between the PA/MD line and just south of the Route 472 interchange in West Nottingham Township, East Nottingham Township, and Oxford Borough, Chester County.

Proposed roadway work includes full-depth reconstruction of the existing pavement, minor shoulder widening, guide rail replacement, drainage improvements, and new stormwater management facilities.  The proposed bridge work includes the rehabilitation or replacement of four bridges and two mainline culverts along the corridor.  The mainline pavement will be lowered, or the intersecting roadway will be raised at each overpass to obtain the required vertical clearance over the bypass.  Proposed traffic operations improvements include lengthening of acceleration and deceleration lanes at entrance and exit ramps, intersection control improvements at the ramp terminal intersections, intersection control improvements at two at-grade intersections, and intelligent transportation systems including CCTV cameras and Dynamic Message Signs.

Approach roadway work is proposed at the intersecting roadways including Sylmar Road, Ridge Road, and Route 272 to accommodate turning lanes and profile adjustments at the interchanges.  New traffic signals and turning lanes are proposed at the U.S. 1/Route 272 ramp terminal intersections.  The intersections of U.S. 1 with Sylmar Rd and U.S. 1 with Ridge Road are being studied for new intersection control and safety improvements.

This project will coordinate with local trail initiatives and potentially incorporate trail improvements in select locations as shown in Chester County’s Southern Chester County Circuit Trail Feasibility Study.

This project is currently in the preliminary engineering phase. It is estimated that construction will start in early 2027 and be completed in 2030.
