Ship Road over Valley Road Bridge Replacement
Project Location
Overview
The project involves the replacement of the existing single-span concrete slab bridge on Ship Road over Valley Creek in West Whiteland Township. The existing bridge is in poor condition and is posted for a 35 tons/40 tons combination weight restriction. The deck and superstructure are in poor condition with several large spalls, exposed rebar, and longitudinal cracking. This bridge has concrete abutments and wing walls.
The proposed bridge is a single-cell precast concrete box culvert that will be widened to an out-to-out width of approximately 40’ to support two 11-foot travel lanes, two 4-foot shoulders, and a 5-foot sidewalk along the west side. The new bridge will be 27.2’ long. The bridge barrier will consist of brown-painted PA
Type 10M. The bridge and approaches will be realigned to the West to avoid impacts to Clover Mill Creek and the adjacent Evan Lewis House (a property listed on the National Register of Historic Places) on the east (downstream) side. The proposed centerline will be shifted approximately 8.5 ft west (downstream) away from the historic property.
In addition to the bridge replacement, the project will include the following:
- Approximately 360’ of pavement reconstruction to the north and 300’ of pavement reconstruction to the south.
- Installation of new brown painted guide rail
- New pavement markings.
- Installation of six new inlets along the west side of Ship Road. Two inlets will be installed north of the bridge. Four inlets will be installed south of the bridge and tied into the existing inlet system on Sylvania Road. The existing outlet adjacent to Sylvania Road will be moved to the wing wall of the proposed bridge.
Right-of-way acquisition will be required. Temporary construction easements will be required for contractor access during construction.
