Ewing Road over the Middle Branch of White Clay Creek Bridge Replacements
Project Location
Overview
This project will replace two existing structures carrying Ewing Road (SR 3044) over an unnamed tributary to the Middle Branch of the White Clay Creek. The project is located in Penn Township, Chester County, about 2 miles northwest of West Grove, near the Route 1 bypass. Ewing Road carries 500 vehicles daily (2024) with 9% truck traffic. The surrounding area is a combination of single-family homes, farmland, and
densely forested areas.
The existing structure that is 280’ west of Woodcrest Road was constructed in 1910 and is a concrete-encased steel I-beam bridge that has a curb-to-curb width of 14.1’ and a span length of 12’. The existing structure that is 500’ southeast of Tice Road was constructed in 1911 and is a reinforced concrete slab bridge that has a curb-to-curb width of 15’-6” and a span length of 12’.
Both new structures will be replaced on the existing horizontal alignment with minor grade changes to the vertical alignment. The proposed replacement structures are anticipated to be reinforced concrete box culverts. Both structures will be will be lengthened. The reconstructed roadway will be widened to support two (2) 11-foot travel lanes and two 3-foot shoulders for a 28-foot section. A new guide rail will be installed and drainage facilities will be upgraded to reduce erosion near the bridge.
During construction, Ewing Road will be detoured. Driveway access will be maintained at all times.
