Fifth Street Bridge Project

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announces a Plans Display for the State Route 1029/Fifth Street Bridge over US 22 in Whitehall Township, Lehigh County.

This plan is provided to the public for information concerning the replacement of the Fifth Street Bridge over US 22. The Fifth Street Bridge project is in the preliminary engineering phase. The information presented is intended to provide an overview of the project. Specific project details are still being developed. Your thoughts and input on this project are very important to PennDOT.

The previous bridge was removed during a previous US 22 project due to horizontal and vertical clearance issues. The roadway approaches to the south and north of the Fifth Street bridge will be reconstructed. The bridge and approach roadways will include sidewalk on both sides.

The project is located to the west of the Fullerton Avenue Interchange in a suburban neighborhood setting with a mix of commercial and residential properties along the project corridor. Fifth Street Bridge will re-establish a vital corridor to Whitehall Township as well as restore community connectivity lost with the removal of the previous Fifth Street bridge over US 22.

The Fifth Street Bridge project will be constructed concurrently with the Fullerton Avenue Interchange project. The Fullerton Avenue Interchange project will be presented to the public in the future. Anticipated improvements to US 22 under Fifth Street Bridge are shown on the Fifth Street Bridge presentation boards but will be included with the Fullerton Avenue Interchange project.

The digital version of this information will be available to view online until June 7, 2024.

Construction is anticipated to begin in early 2028, but additional design work is required before construction schedules or staging plans can be finalized. All schedules are subject to change.

The purpose of the plans display is to introduce the project and receive public input regarding any questions or concerns with the project. It is also an opportunity for the public to review and comment on the project's potential effect upon cultural resources pursuant to the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation's 36 CFR Part 800 regulations implementing Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act.

The project documents can be made available in alternative languages or formats if requested.
