Project Overview

The Route 2007 Section PRS project involves preservation repairs to the crossing of Route 2007 over Luzerne County Redevelopment Authority, S Pennsylvania Ave, South Wilkes Barre Blvd, S Baltimore Drive, S Welles Street, and Local RR Branch & RR Side Track in the City of Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne County. The project proposes to repair the existing South Street Bridge to sustain a safe crossing at this location and for the facilities below. Repairs to the existing 17-span reinforced concrete open-span arch, prestressed concrete I-beams, rolled steel I-beams, and prestressed concrete adjacent box beam bridge include replacement of the compression seal joints at the piers, grinding and rewelding of stitch welds, concrete repairs, debris removal, painting of steel superstructure and stringer bearings, crack sealing in the substructure units, and replacement of damaged chain like fence and hand hole cover. Additional roadway improvements include repairs to the far approach roadway and replacement of the damaged guiderail. No utility impacts or required right-of-way are anticipated to construct the project.

Historical or cultural resources present within the project site include the Former Central Railroad of New Jersey (NRHP-Eligible, PASHPO Res. No. 2010RE03835), Former Lehigh Valley Railroad (NRHP-Eligible, PASHPO Res. No. 2010RE00722), and O. Karma Terrace (Boulevard Townhomes) Playground. The project will have negligible effect on these resources and no other site resources will be impacted as part of the project.

Virtual Plans Display

The plans display will be held online and will be available from September 3, 2024 to October 1, 2024.

The public is encouraged to respond to the public questionnaire and provide comments by clicking on the Public Questionnaire to print a PDF questionnaire to be completed by hand and mailed to the address at the bottom of the form or emailed to drau@pa.gov.

Traffic Control

The project is expected to be built under short term lane shifts of Route 2007 traffic. Two lanes of traffic will be maintained over the bridge at all times during construction. Short term single lane closures on S Baltimore Dr, S Wilkes-Barre Blvd, and S Pennsylvania Ave may also be needed for the concrete repairs, painting, welding, and crack sealing in this area.
