Clearfield, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) updated drivers on the schedule for its South Atherton Street (Route 3014) project that stretches from Curtin Road to just north of Westerly Parkway in State College. Drivers traveling through the work zone can expect the following Monday, June 3, through Friday, Friday 7.
On Monday, June 3, a crew will place sewer line near Railroad Street. Several different traffic patterns will be used throughout the day, as needed, to route traffic around the work areas. PennDOT urges motorists to pay attention to work zone and directional signage to enhance safety and keep traffic moving efficiently.
On Tuesday, June 4, the contractor will:
- Close the left (passing) lane heading eastbound toward Boalsburg. This closure will be in place between White Course Drive and Calder Way. Traffic will pass through the zone via the open right (travel) lane.
- Close both westbound lanes heading toward North Atherton Street and shift traffic into the eastbound lanes at Calder Way. Westbound traffic will stay in the eastbound lanes until reaching White Course Drive and then transition back to the westbound side.
- Close the right lane of Route 26 southbound heading away from downtown between Burrowes and Atherton Streets.
- Remove long-term traffic control measures between West Irvin Avenue and Center Lane after crews finish pavement marking.
- A pedestrian detour, posted with signage, will be implemented at the Atherton Street and College Avenue intersection. PennDOT urges pedestrians to use said detour and avoid walking through closed sidewalk signs into the construction zone.
Wednesday, June 5, through Friday, June 7, crews will work between College Avenue and White Course Drive to install new drainage, perform full-depth roadway reconstruction, and implement sewer line upgrades. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours. The traffic signal at College Avenue will be in flash mode as necessary.
The contractor will keep one lane open to traffic in each direction when not working.

Overall work on the project includes roadway reconstruction, drainage improvements that include pipes and inlets, water and sewer lines, concrete curbing, sidewalks and detectable warning surfaces, pavement markings, traffic signals and supports, and miscellaneous items. HRI, Inc. of State College is the contractor on this $30.7 million project. PennDOT anticipates the contractor completing the project in the fall of 2024, but all work is weather and schedule dependent.
PennDOT reminds motorists that intermittent traffic stops are possible for short periods during work activities and urges drivers to use caution when traveling through the work zone. PennDOT also reminds drivers not to follow construction equipment into the closed lane and to use both lanes to the merge point to minimize traffic back-ups and shorten travel delays when approaching the work zone.
