Clearfield, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) updated drivers on the schedule for its South Atherton Street (Route 3014) project that stretches from Curtin Road to just north of Westerly Parkway in State College. Motorists traveling through the work zone can expect the following the week of May 6. 

Crews will continue work on full-depth roadway reconstruction and installation of new drainage pipes between West Irvin Avenue and Center Lane between 7:00 AM and 5:00 PM. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control at the Westerly Parkway intersection as necessary between 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM. PennDOT urges drivers to build extra time into their travel schedules or consider alternate routes. 

Crews will also begin sewer line work between Curtain Road and Railroad Avenue on Monday, May 6. PennDOT expects this work to continue through at least Thursday, May 9. Eastbound traffic heading toward North Atherton Street will be shifted into the center lane between the hours of 7:00 AM and 5:00 PM. 

Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control as needed on these dates at these locations: 

• Monday, May 6, a crew will install new traffic poles at the intersection of College Avenue and Westerly Parkway.
• Tuesday, May 7, a crew will activate the new traffic signals at the intersection of Atherton Street and Beaver Avenue.
• Thursday, May 9, a crew will transfer Intelligent Transportation System equipment from the temporary signal poles to the new signal poles both the aforementioned intersections. 

The contractor will keep one lane open to traffic in each direction when not working. A pedestrian detour with posted signage remains in effect at and around the Westerly Parkway intersection. 

PennDOT expects the traffic to be reduced to a single lane in each direction between West Irvin Avenue and Center Lane until early June while the contractor completes drainage improvements through the work zone. 

PennDOT urges motorists to pay attention to work zone and directional signage to enhance safety and keep traffic moving efficiently. Message boards alerting motorists to the construction zone and changing traffic patterns remain in place.

Overall work on the project includes roadway reconstruction, drainage improvements that include pipes and inlets, water and sewer lines, concrete curbing, sidewalks and detectable warning surfaces, pavement markings, traffic signals and supports, and miscellaneous items. HRI, Inc. of State College is the contractor on this $30.7 million project. PennDOT anticipates the contractor completing the project in the fall of 2024, but all work is weather and schedule dependent. 

PennDOT reminds motorists that intermittent traffic stops are possible for short periods during work activities and urges drivers to use caution when traveling through the work zone. PennDOT also reminds drivers not to follow construction equipment into the closed lane and to use both lanes to the merge point to minimize traffic back-ups and shorten travel delays when approaching the work zone.
