Pittsburgh, PA – PennDOT District 11 is
announcing northbound Freeport Road (Route 1001) under the New Kensington
Bridge in East Deer Township, Allegheny County has reopened to traffic.
Northbound Freeport
Road under the New Kensington Bridge closed to traffic on July 17 to allow
crews to conduct spall repairs and jacking operations. The original
configuration at the northern end of the New Kensington Bridge has been
restored.
This $24.59 million
New Kensington / C.L. Schmitt Bridge preservation projects began in March 2023.
The bridge, which spans both East Deer Township, Allegheny County and the City
of New Kensington, Westmoreland County will undergo a latex overlay, several
structural steel repairs, concrete substructure repairs, full painting of the
existing superstructure, expansion dam replacement, installation of new light
poles and luminaries, and minor approach roadway work. As work occurs this
year, motorists can expect a lane width reduction along with flagging
operations within the work zone. A
six-week full closure and detour will occur on the bridge as crews perform the
latex overlay and structural steel repairs located at the expansion dams. The
overall completion date is expected to be in the fall of 2024.
