Route 18 and Route 58 Improvement Project

Project Overview

This project is to improve Route 18 and Route 58 near Thiel College in the Borough of Greenville, Mercer County.

The proposed project area includes Route 18 from the intersection of Route 358 to the intersection with Mill Hill Road, and Route 58 from the intersection with Route 18 to East Craig Street.

The project includes improvements at three intersections, including realignments at Route 18 and Route 58, Route 18 and Packard Avenue, and Route 58 and Packard Avenue. Proposed work also includes new or upgraded sidewalk, curb ramps, driveway entrances, milling and paving, base repair, new traffic signal, drainage updates and pavement marking updates.

The proposal has been updated to include improvements on Thiel College's campus and addition of a cul-de-sac near the intersection of College Avenue and Packard Avenue Extension.

The project is being funded predominately with state and federal funds. Some of the proposed sidewalk improvements on campus will be funded by Thiel College to enhance their ADA accessibility and pedestrian flow.

Construction is tentatively planned to take place in 2024 and 2025.

Traffic Impacts

The project will be completed in five phases of construction. There will be a series of pedestrian detours as sidewalks, curb ramps, and crosswalks are constructed around the project limits. 

There will be lane restrictions on Route 18 as needed but no full closures are anticipated. 

Route 58 will have a northbound detour for thru traffic for one week. During this phase late in the construction, the road will be closed between Route 18 and 200 feet north of Packard Avenue Extension and the intersection with Ridgeway Avenue. The detour for cars will be Route 18 to Williamson Rd to Route 58 and the truck detour will be Route 18 to Route 322 to Route 58. During this time final stormwater drainage connections will be placed, and the road paved between the old and new alignment.
