PennDOT Highlights 2022 Construction Season Plans, Bipartisan Infrastructure Law Benefits

​With construction and maintenance work underway across Pennsylvania, we recently outlined 2022 plans in each of PennDOT's 11 engineering districts. Each region's benefits from the federal Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) were also highlighted.

The BIL will provide at least $608.5 million in additional investment this year, supporting and accelerating many projects. The department anticipates putting out contracts for $2.5 billion in work this year, complementing work completed every day by department crews.

District 1

In PennDOT's District 1, 90 projects are anticipated for 2022. Approximately 177 miles of roadway will be improved, and 24 bridges will be repaired or replaced. Thanks to the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, $20.5 million more will be invested locally.

In PennDOT's District 1 (Crawford, Erie, Forest, Mercer, Venango, and Warren counties), 90 projects are anticipated to continue or be awarded this year, worth more than $299 million. Work plans for the 2022 construction season call for improvements to approximately 177 miles of roadway and the replacement or repair of 24 bridges, including 15 in poor condition and two historic bridges that are being preserved and repurposed. 

In 2022 alone the BIL is bringing nearly $20.5 million in additional funding for projects in PennDOT's northwest region. The funds will be used by the department and its planning partners.

The BIL means more money for the local transportation system too. Starting in 2023, PennDOT will dedicate $1.05 million of the BIL funding to locally owned bridge projects in the northwest region each year. This increases PennDOT's District 1 annual investment in local bridges to $5.4 million through 2026.


District 2

In PennDOT's District 2, 98 projects are anticipated for 2022. Approximately 210 miles of roadway will be improved, and 24 bridges will be repaired or replaced. Thanks to the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, $22 million more will be invested locally.

In PennDOT's District 2 (Cameron, Centre, Clearfield, Clinton, Elk, Juniata, McKean, Mifflin, and Potter counties), 98 projects are anticipated to start or continue this year. Work plans include more than 210 miles of paving and repair or replacement of 53 bridges, and these improvements include projects supported and accelerated by the BIL.

In 2022 alone the BIL is bringing at least $22 million in additional funding to be allocated by the department and its local Metropolitan and Rural Planning Organization (MPO/RPO) partners.





District 3

In PennDOT's District 3, 75 projects are anticipated for 2022 with a value of $265 million, as well as 185 miles of resurfacing and 47 bridge projects. Thanks to the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, $27.2 million more will be invested locally.

In PennDOT's District 3 (Bradford, Columbia, Lycoming, Montour, Northumberland, Snyder, Sullivan, Tioga, and Union counties), 75 projects are anticipated to start or continue this year. The department anticipates investing more than $265 million this year in this region. Work plans include rehabilitating, reconstructing, and resurfacing 185 miles of highways and working on 47 bridge projects.

These improvements include projects supported and accelerated by BIL. In 2022 alone, the BIL is bringing at least $27.2 million in additional funding to District 3 to be allocated by the department and its local Metropolitan and Rural Planning Organization (MPO/RPO) partners.



District 4

In PennDOT's District 4, 32 projects are anticipated for 2022, as well as 245 miles of paving and 88 bridge projects. Thanks to the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, $49.6 million more will be invested locally.

In PennDOT's District 4 (Lackawanna, Luzerne, Pike, Susquehanna, Wayne, and Wyoming counties), 32 projects will be bid in 2022. Work plans include nearly 245 miles of paving and repairing or replacing 88 bridges.

In 2022 alone the BIL is bringing at least $49.6 million in additional funding to be allocated by the department and its local Metropolitan and Rural Planning Organization (MPO/RPO) partners.







District 5

In PennDOT's District 5, $500 million in projects are anticipated for 2022, as well as 116 miles of paving, 265 miles of seal coating, and 31 bridge projects. Thanks to the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, $50.8 million more will be invested locally.

In PennDOT's District 5 (Berks, Carbon, Lehigh, Monroe, Northampton, and Schuylkill counties), the total value of projects under construction this year is approximately $500 million. These investments will fund improvements like 116 miles of paving, 31 bridges being repaired or replaced, and 265 miles of seal coating.

In 2022 alone the BIL is bringing at least $50.8 million in additional funding to the District 5 region to be allocated by the department and its local Metropolitan and Rural Planning Organization (MPO/RPO) partners. 





District 6

In PennDOT's District 6, 200 projects are anticipated for 2022, as well as 300 miles of resurfacing, and 40 bridge repairs or replacements. Thanks to the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, $115 million more will be invested locally.

In PennDOT's District 6 (Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, and Philadelphia counties), more than 200 projects are anticipated to start and continue this year. This year's planned work includes nearly 300 miles of resurfacing and repair or replacement of more than 40 bridges. These improvements include projects supported and accelerated by the BIL.

In 2022 alone the BIL is bringing at least $115 million in additional funding to be allocated by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) and the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission.




District 8

In PennDOT's District 8, 133 projects are anticipated for 2022 with a value of $297 million. Also expect 123 miles of paving and 80 bridge repairs or replacements. Thanks to the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, $55.6 million more will be invested locally.

In PennDOT's District 8 (Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Lancaster, Lebanon, Perry, and York counties), 133 projects are anticipated to start or continue this year worth an estimated $297 million. Highlights include nearly 123 miles of paving and 80 bridges being repaired or replaced.

In 2022 alone the BIL is bringing at least $55.6 million in additional funding to be allocated by the department and its local Metropolitan and Rural Planning Organization (MPO/RPO) partners in this region.





District 9

In PennDOT's District 9, $118 million in projects are anticipated for 2022. Also expect 150 miles of paving, 373 miles of seal coating and 80 bridge repairs. Thanks to the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, $21.4 million more will be invested locally.

In PennDOT's District 9 (Bedford, Blair, Cambria, Fulton, Huntingdon, and Somerset counties), more than 55 projects are anticipated to be under construction this year. This includes 150 miles of paving, the repair or replacement of 45 bridges, 373 miles of seal coating, and $118 million in new construction projects.

In 2022 alone, the BIL is bringing over $21.4 million in additional funding to the District 9 region to be allocated by the department and its local Metropolitan and Rural Planning Organization (MPO/RPO) partners.





District 10

In PennDOT's District 10, we anticipate 559 miles of paving and 26 bridge repairs or replacements in 2022. Thanks to the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, $135 million more will be invested locally.

In PennDOT's District 10 (Armstrong, Butler, Clarion, Indiana, and Jefferson counties), work plans for the 2022 construction season include nearly 559 miles of paving and the repair or replacement of 26 bridges.


In 2022 alone the BIL is bringing at least $135.5 million in additional funding to be allocated by the department and its local Metropolitan and Rural Planning Organization (MPO/RPO) partners.






District 11

In PennDOT's District 11, we anticipate 90 projects in 2022 with a $317 million value. Also expect 388 miles of resurfacing, 41 slide repairs and 67 bridge projects. Thanks to the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, $68 million more will be invested locally.

In PennDOT's District 11 (Allegheny, Beaver, and Lawrence counties), more than 90 projects are anticipated to start and continue this year. The 2022 season kicks off with more than $317 million of infrastructure projects in this region. Work plans include 388 miles of paving or roadway maintenance, 41 slide repairs, and the repair or replacement of 67 bridges – 24 of which are in poor condition.

In 2022 alone the BIL is bringing at least $68.06 million in additional funding to be allocated by the department and the Southwest Pennsylvania Commission.




District 12

In PennDOT's District 12, we anticipate 94 projects in 2022 with a $462 million value. Also expect 600 miles of resurfacing, 26 slide repairs and 54 bridge projects. Thanks to the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, $21 million more will be invested locally.

In PennDOT's District 12 (Fayette, Greene, Washington, and Westmoreland counties), more than 94 projects are anticipated to be under construction this year. The total value of projects is approximately $462 million. Work plans include more than 600 miles of paving and roadway maintenance, 54 bridge preservations with 35 bridges being rehabilitated or replaced, and 26 slide repairs.

In 2022 alone the BIL is bringing at least $21 million in additional funding provided through the SPC to the four counties of District 12 plus $20 million provided through the Interstate Transportation Improvement Program.
